The third grade really enjoyed learning about different fossils by using the online database Kids InfoBits. We were loaned the mini fossil kit from Tellus Museum and the students were tasked to look up each fossil. They wrote down some pretty interesting facts.

We’re always on the lookout to make the Ison Media Center easier to use. Recently we put out some new signs to help the students with the Dewey Decimal System’s use of alphabetical order. Now the students will know exactly where to look after they search the computer catalog for the perfect book. Finding that perfect book might also be one of our new books! We make sure to select award winning, popular, and trendy books to supplement our already fabulous collection. Come take a peek!
How many points has your child earned for reading this month? Did your child take a quiz on the book you read together last night? How close is your child to making their reading goal? Is your child participating in AR?
All students 1st through 5th are participating in Accelerated Reader (also known as AR). If your child doesn’t have any points yet it’s okay! They can start today and earn points! AR is a computer program that allows students to take short quizzes on books they have read. Quizzes can only be taken at school, but students can read/prepare for the quiz anytime. The quizzes are graded directly after being taken and the student will earn points for each quiz passed. There are tons of books that have AR quizzes at Ison Springs. Books are not assigned to the student. They choose books that interest them! Of course, their teacher and friendly librarian are always there to help with level appropriate choices. You can visit the AR tab on the Media Center website to see how to search for AR books. For teachers, it is a way to monitor independent reading comprehension. For students, the points obtained make the quizzes into a challenge. It is a fun incentive to read more and a way to show their comprehension abilities. Using this program helps a student see their progress and understand that reading for comprehension is important verses speeding through a book without focus. The teacher will give each student a goal (number of points). Striving to obtain this goal will give the student motivation to work hard and do their best job. At the end of the year, the students who have achieved their goals will be rewarded with a Reading Party in the media center! The kindergarten and first graders had a wonderful surprise last week. The third grade came by to read a nonfiction book they have been writing. It was so sweet to see the older students being so caring towards the younger. The little ones really enjoyed the small group attention. The 2nd grade has been learning about the Creek and Cherokee Native Americans. They have researched using books, websites, and gotten information from a Nearpod presentation. The also used the MyStory app to write and gather pictures telling about facts they have learned. 2nd grade you are super workers! The kindergarten has been learning about community helpers. We have read some nonfiction books telling us about police officers, firefighters, teachers, and many more. The students are also exploring what tools each person needs in order to work at their job. I must say that they did a wonderful job informing me that the librarian needs books! :)
This fun activity was a huge success for all who participated! I have a feeling we have quite a few computer programers in Ison's future.
After reading The Grumpy Badger, the first grade enjoyed illustating a page of the story each. It was interesting to see who knew all the details of the story! We are working on listening for details and picturing the story in our imagination while it's being read! We won't be grumpy this holiday season!
Clifford came to visit Ison Springs Elementary! He is a promoter of reading for Scholastic and made a special visit to start off the book fair (a special thanks to Ms. Schmidt for showing him around). The Book Fair was a GREAT success thanks to all who volunteered their time. Many students had a good time getting books that interests them. Having a home library with chosen books is a great way to instill a love of reading.
We have been reading some fun fall books like Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. What is your favorite fall book? |
