How many points has your child earned for reading this month? Did your child take a quiz on the book you read together last night? How close is your child to making their reading goal? Is your child participating in AR?
All students 1st through 5th are participating in Accelerated Reader (also known as AR). If your child doesn’t have any points yet it’s okay! They can start today and earn points! AR is a computer program that allows students to take short quizzes on books they have read. Quizzes can only be taken at school, but students can read/prepare for the quiz anytime. The quizzes are graded directly after being taken and the student will earn points for each quiz passed. There are tons of books that have AR quizzes at Ison Springs. Books are not assigned to the student. They choose books that interest them! Of course, their teacher and friendly librarian are always there to help with level appropriate choices. You can visit the AR tab on the Media Center website to see how to search for AR books. For teachers, it is a way to monitor independent reading comprehension. For students, the points obtained make the quizzes into a challenge. It is a fun incentive to read more and a way to show their comprehension abilities. Using this program helps a student see their progress and understand that reading for comprehension is important verses speeding through a book without focus. The teacher will give each student a goal (number of points). Striving to obtain this goal will give the student motivation to work hard and do their best job. At the end of the year, the students who have achieved their goals will be rewarded with a Reading Party in the media center!
