Our digital citizenship lessons are going well and will continue into October! Digital citizenship is curriculum that is taught at the beginning of the year by the METI (media specialist) and reinforced by the teachers. Each lesson focuses on using the internet in a safe way. We discuss topics such as online manners, protecting yourself by keeping information private, cheating/copyright, a student’s digital footprint, and even self-image and how websites will market to children. Each lesson is different considering the age of the student. In this technological age we want to make sure everyone stays safe when navigating the internet. For more information about how to help your child stay safe online, please visit the Common Sense Education website: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/parent-concerns
We are so excited to announce that our Ison Springs Broadcast will be starting soon. The morning broadcast is run by the students… with teacher assistance. It features Ison Springs scholars as the anchors and various reporters. The students also get a chance to work behind the scenes as new equipment operators. Our previous broadcasting system was very old and stopped working completely. Thanks to the PTA we have brand new equipment this year! It has been installed and we are currently practicing with the new system and will be starting up the broadcast soon! We are presently auditioning fourth and fifth grade students who are dedicated to the responsibility of arriving every morning no later than 7:25am. They need to have a permission slip (sent home) to participate. Once we have our groups they will rotate every few weeks. The students are so excited to start and we are SO grateful to our wonderful Ison parents for contributing to the PTA and allowing these students this opportunity.
The students have been so enthusiastic to start their book checkouts! We are playing games like Kahoot, searching for QR coded information, and completing scavenger hunts to get ourselves back familiar with the media center procedures. Such FUN!!! Who: 4th and 5th graders may join

It’s a fun reading completion where student get to participate in six rounds of questions all pertaining to books! The book list is currently out on their website (listed below). The first book we will be discussing is The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. If you are interested, please read this book over the summer! http://gcba.coe.uga.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2017-18-Gr4-8-Top20.pdf Today we discussed how fairy tales can change or have different versions depending on the time period and culture. Then the students got to make their own mini fairy tale using Puppet Pals on the iPads. What they came up with was adorable and creative.
This week we talked about Earth Day and the importance of keeping our environment nice for future generations. We read the book Ants in Your ants, Worms in Your Plants! By Diane deGroat. In the story, each student discussed ways to help the environment. So, in class each student made a mini poster that persuaded others to help out the environment too!
The spring book fair is coming up the week of May 15th! We are always looking for volunteers to help students find books, work at the cash register, or assist with set up/break down. If you have young (pre-school aged) children, just bring them along! They can go on the computers and play some educational games while you help at the book fair. We appreciate our parent volunteers!
These students are learning to use the encyclopedia. First, we went over the hardback books that are available in the library. Next, we used the database Britannica School Elementary on the iPads. The students looked up animals and places for their upcoming reports. Great job scholars! |
